Media Literacy as a Character Development Tool for Teenagers

Faculty of Computer and Engineering – How should Indonesian teenagers cultivate literacy in the face of global challenges like these? Literacy culture aims to make us intelligent individuals with skills. The quality of a nation is determined by the intelligence and knowledge of its people, which is acquired through both oral and written information. The more people in an area seek knowledge, the higher their civilization becomes, and a nation’s culture progresses alongside its literacy culture. As the future generation of the nation, we must be aware that globalization increases competitiveness among human resources. Intelligence and skills are essential to compete in the global era. If we do not use the internet wisely and do not have an interest in reading books, where will we get that intelligence? Even to acquire skills, we need books or reading materials.

These facts show that teenagers must adapt to technological developments by enriching themselves with knowledge. The presence of the internet should positively impact teenagers in acquiring knowledge, not diminish their intelligence. Cultivating a literacy culture in individuals can work well if they know how to use and utilize technology wisely. There is so much to gain from the internet if we use it correctly, especially for teenagers who are very familiar with it. If they are reluctant to read conventional books, they can read informative and reliable materials online to avoid fake news or “hoaxes.” Technology also provides digital book facilities that can be easily accessed via mobile phones, allowing us to read books without limits. We can also use the internet to hone our writing skills by uploading our writings for the public to read. Thus, the knowledge we gain from the internet benefits not only ourselves but also others and our surroundings, making us useful teenagers for the nation and the country.

Media literacy is the ability to understand, analyze, and construct media imagery. This ability aims to make the audience, including children, aware of how media is constructed and accessed. Implementing digital literacy can make society wiser in using and accessing technology. In the field of technology, especially information and communication, digital literacy relates to users’ abilities. Digital literacy skills help students master their ability to understand and navigate these challenges effectively, making them more responsible digital citizens.

Media literacy aims to help consumers gain sufficient knowledge and understanding of media content to control its influence on their lives. It protects vulnerable and susceptible consumers from the impacts of media and new media culture penetration. Many students have not yet used gadgets wisely and optimally, as seen from their low achievements. Strengthening character education based on school culture involves literacy activities. A new understanding of digital literacy, rooted in computer literacy and information literacy, is needed. Computer literacy developed when microcomputers became widely used not only in business environments but also in society. Information literacy spread widely when information became easier to compile, access, and disseminate through networked social information technology. This issue highlights the low character among students, especially their sense of responsibility. They often forget their roles and duties as students, children, community members, and worshippers of God Almighty.
